Food Culture in YEG

I’m starting this blog, in short because I think that YEG or Edmonton, boasts a burgeoning food scene, with a ton of potential. There are a multitude of private mom n’ pop locales to devour. By devour, I mean both gorge myself on delicious eats, and finally speak the truth about some of the sloppy execution and third rate ingredients that are used in establishments that charge premium prices. I find it difficult to find an honest review of a place, where the worst a reviewer (or barely a critic) can say is that a dish was ‘ok’ or ‘disappointing’ or ‘slightly lacking’ in some minor areas of flavour, feel, or flourish. I am tired of hearing rave reviews of a restaurant only to arrive and eat and find the same feeling of discontent. Just because I like the idea of supporting the little guy over chains, does not mean that I am willing to pay to eat food that is sub-par. So, I am going to devour and then roast or boast about the carnal experience of culinary exploration.

I find that our North American Food Culture prefers variety over quality. Many of the restaurants I frequent, have dishes that they do well and that I crave. But, I shouldn’t have to sift through a slew of dishes that are good ideas, then poorly executed or cheapened by a lack of quality ingredients, in order to find that one (or two) things that the establishment does well.

I’m starting a serious site for serious critique, not because I want to sink those quirky delightful proprietorships for flailing in a tough industry. I am doing this because like the dishes, and atmosphere, and quirkiness that comes through the onslaught of mediocre food, I crave honest and constructive critique.

Bon Appetit!
